 “Deconstruction and Materials Reuse”

May 2012 presentation in our monthly series

Please join the California Central Coast Chapter (C4) of the U.S. Green Building Council in Ventura on Monday, May 21st, at 5:30 PM for an informative presentation about the benefits ofDeconstruction versus the more common practice of Demolition, by Wally Geer, a local Architect and board member of The Reuse People.

Deconstruction”, not to be confused with “Demolition,” is the sustainable building strategy of taking a building apart piece by piece with the intent of reusing and / or recycling as much of its original components and structural elements as possible. Deconstruction can Benefit the environment by preventing a substantial amount of reusable material from going to landfill; can be cost effective and in many cases actually profitable when compared to demolition; can provide an owner and the development team a great deal of good will from the general public, building officials and public officials; and, Deconstruction can bring credits to a project that is pursuing green certifications including LEED, Build It Green, or the higher tiers of the CalGreen building code.

Wally Geer Has been active as an architect and residential real estate developer for over 30 years. He was an early pioneer in sustainable building, and built his first  “off the grid” homes as a developer in the 1980s in Colorado.  He has since built homes on a speculative basis that have included alternative building systems including straw bale, ICFs & SIP construction.  Mr. Geer has served in numerous local and regional positions with non-profit building industry associations and currently serves on the Board of Directors of The ReUse People, a 501(c)3 non-profit that is one of America’s largest deconstruction companies.

The presentation takes place at the Patagonia Firehouse Building, 280 W. Main Street in downtown Ventura on Monday, May 21st 2012, from 5:30 – 7:30 pm.   The monthly meetings are free and open to the public.
