Southern California Edison offers a wide range of courses – from the very basic to the more advanced – in areas key to clean energy savings. Energy education classes and workshops are offered in various areas, open to the public, and are free of charge.

Course Description:
New and future energy codes will mandate higher energy performance and lower greenhouse gas emissions. As reach codes, green standards, and other requirements take effect across North America, a growing number of developers and builders are concerned about how these requirements will impact construction costs. The Passive House Standard and its design principles are where things are headed, and some other jurisdictions have already adopted the passive house standard as a means of reaching future energy goals. In British Columbia, for example, all new buildings must meet near-Passive House levels of performance by 2032. Studies in California have also shown how Passive House principles can reap large energy benefits even in our moderate climate. In this session, we will share lessons learned from planning millions of square feet of multifamily Passive House. This session will explore why some developers are choosing to build to the voluntary standard, survey what the first generation of multifamily Passive House buildings cost to construct, and discuss how to lower the cost of planning and building any high-performance project.

Agenda:
• Summary of passive design principles for high performance buildings
• Review of multi-family passive house costs in other markets
• Passive house requirements in the California climate
• Milestones for affordable passive house
• Three strategies for cost-effective projects

Learning Objectives:
• Describe the Passive House standards and how they relate to emerging code requirements
• Explain why multifamily projects are electing to build Passive House
• Understand the construction cost premium for Passive House and similar multifamily projects
• Show awareness of key milestones for reducing the cost of high-performance buildings

Target Audience:
• Residential Builders & Developers
